Treasured: Cougar bracelet

It's Thursday, so it's time for our next installment of "Treasured." Keeping with the recent theme of animal jewelry, I'd be remiss to not mention what's been known in local circles as the "JoAnn bracelet": my black cougar bracelet.
I remember finding it with my sister during a spring break trip back home last year, and we did some thrifting at a local shop called Finder's Keepers. We kept peering into the jewelry case, hoping to find something fun, when the owner dumped a whole bag of items on the counter to price tag. I saw this bracelet and I'm pretty sure my eyes did some crazy "Lord of the Rings"  Gollum-inspired "I wants it" dilation. I didn't even give the owner a chance to put a sticker on it, and two minutes later, it was officially mine.
What I love about this bracelet is that at first glance, it's really gawdy. It's got two cougar heads holding a silver ring in their mouths, as if they're eternally bound to fight over it. It's got rhinestone detailing and the cougars have green eyes. It's exactly the kind of piece of jewelry I would have thought was tacky when I was 10.

It is, however, completely awesome. I put it on and I'm done accessorizing for the day. I've gotten tons of compliments on it from different people over the past year, and it's one of those pieces where people want to know the story behind it. I wish I knew the story behind it -- I wish I knew who the previous owner was, what she (or he) was like, whether or not that person is still alive.
How I've worn it. (How haven't I worn it?)

I've mentioned how I like to name my animal jewelry. I just refer to this bracelet as "the Twins," although they do remind me of the eels Flotsam and Jetsam from "The Little Mermaid." Something tells me they would fight over a rhinestone ring, too.

signature1 by you.

  2. joann, i know i've been lax about commenting as much as i'd like lately (many apologies) but i have been reading eagerly and i just have to say how amazing your writing is getting. this post is short and sweet and funny--it's just the right tone; it's interesting and unusual and it captures that fleeting part of personality. you're rockin' it, friend!
and p.s. i happen to love ridiculous animal jewelry as well. i have a ring with a snake as a head. about 35% as amazing as this bracelet, but still...
