Treasured: Animal brooches

I've decided to start a new feature here called "Treasured," in which I'll pay tribute to some of the lesser known but really loved items in my closet. It'll be a way for you to know which items mean a lot to me (the kind of items I'd probably try to save in a house fire), plus it'll probably get me to wear these items more often.

First up, animal brooches. If you'd asked me about wearing animal-inspired jewelry back in high school, I would have called you crazy and possibly tacky. The only people I knew who wore animal jewelry were the older ladies at church who would wear animal and holiday-inspired brooches (think cats in Santa hats that lit up). It just didn't go with my uniform of t-shirts and cargo shorts back then. Oh, naive me.

But, I've changed my mind on animal jewelry. Animal brooches of any shape and size can be awesome. They can add touches of whimsy to any outfit, and when done right, can be total scene-stealers.

For my newer readers, you may not know that I have a habit of naming my animal jewelry. Above, we have Greeley the tiger and Monsho the turtle. I'm pretty sure they have rambunctious parties in my jewelry box. Here's how I've worn Monsho and Greeley before.

So maybe one day I will become that lady who wears holiday-themed cat brooches that light up. I think I'm okay with this.

Have you ever reconsidered an accessory or clothing type that you once thought was tacky?

signature1 by you.

  1. hey soul sister! :o) I fought my urge to wear fun little animal pins for so long for the same reason ... and then I realized how foolish I was being by not having little friends with me whenever I wanted them. These two characters are adorable. I'm sure my nerdephant would get along with them swimmingly (although he might end up dominating the conversation with a lecture on particle physics, but that's part of his charm)

  2. My first encounter with animal jewelry was at my grandmother's funeral. One of her cousins was wearing a spider broach with a chain that clasped to the other side of her cape. It was crazy. Since then, I've learned a greater appreciation for animal jewelry, just not spider broaches.

  3. I think what I enjoy most about this post is that your pins have names. I name everything and its nice to see that I'm not alone.

  4. I'm literally JUST getting into accessories in the past few years so I have a lot of catching up to do! For some reason, I used to think fashion jewerly was junky and gawdy (OK, some pieces are), but I've learned in recent years to appreciate the embellishments and grown to love things like chunky Anthro necklaces or enameled JC jewelry. And F21 - holy cow, fashion jewely heaven! And so cheap!

  9. Oh I'm so glad you posted this!

I've got a couple little animals brooches from my fiance's great grandmother. A turtle, a flower, and a fish. Really interesting, but I don't know what to do with them.

How exactly do you use these things??

  11. Those are cute!

In a similar vein, I have come to sort of like animal prints. I used to think they were horrid, but I'm slowly coming around to think that a little bit can be cute.

  12. Love the new feature! Nothing "formerly tacky" comes to mind at the moment, but I really never used to wear pins/brooches at all. They did seem a bit old-lady-ish to me. Now I love 'em! Especially when they're as cool as these animal ones!

  13. That's so crazy! I have the same turtle pin. They must be siblings. :)
