Featured: My Closet in Sketches

Exciting day -- the talented Lauren from My Closet in Sketches did an awesome illustration of one of my outfits!

I've been obsessed with Lauren's blog for a while now -- I love her eclectic wardrobe combinations and her beautiful illustrations of each outfit. What's really cool is that she shares the story behind each piece in her illustration, whether it was found from her travels or lovingly borrowed from her chic grandmother's closet. All of these little tales help create themes for her daily wear, and Lauren shows just how versatile clothing can become, as she's a master at mixing colors, textiles and patterns.

When she did a sketch of one of my 30 for 30 outfits, I was really honored -- it's kind of like being immortalized in ink much like a comic book superhero. Here's the original photo:

Featured: Self-photography with Hello, Monkeyface!

Self-photography wasn't something I became interested in until I started blogging, but it's since become a full-fledged obsession. I've really come to enjoy it because not only do you get full reign of how you're portrayed, it also becomes a one-person show, and it allows you to be the model, photographer and director of each photo session you do.

Which is why I'm so thrilled that Hello, Monkeyface! has started a "Self-Caught" interview series featuring self-photographers and their tips and experiences. As a self-photographer herself, Monkeyface has the seamless talent of combining playful Photoshop illustrations with stunning style photos, and she created this series to discuss ways to achieve better self-photography.

Click through here to read our thoughts on self-shooting tips, tricks and methods, as well as some awkward bystander stories (mine includes some energetic furry friends). Many thanks to Monkeyface for this feature of Sidewalk Chic, and for starting what is sure to be a delightful series!

Featured: Clothed Much's rule breakers

Besides being a place of cupcakes and awesomeness, I think the blog world is truly democratizing the way society sees fashion. Not only are different body types becoming more accepted and mainstream, but a spectrum of eclectic tastes are coming into the fold. The strict, fussy  "no white after Labor Day" and "no black and brown clothing mixing" rules are just about over. It'll be interesting to see how our generation is remembered in the ol' history books for our sartorial choices because of so much variance (I really hope Crocs aren't given a mention).

Elaine of Clothed Much did a great feature of some bloggers (including yours truly!) who threw caution to the wind and broke their own style rules. Click on over to get inspired!

Featured: Just My Style

Danielle over at Just My Style had me over to guest post -- check it out! I'm wearing some new-to-the-blog-world pieces, and discussing autumn inspiration. A teaser:

And while you're there, take some time to peruse Danielle's blog. Not only does she have awesome style, gorgeous looks and a friendly, fun way of writing, she also lives in Alaska and has these amazing landscape photos that will make you want to pack up and move up north forever. She's a woman after my own heart!
Thanks again for the opportunity, D!

Five Fall Essentials with Twenty York Street

 I've asked my friend Marilou of Twenty York Street to share her essential pieces for fall. Being from Canada, she knows a thing or two about dressing for colder temperatures. Welcome, Marilou!

Howdy, friends of Sidewalk Chalk! I was super excited to work with JoAnn on this collaboration and nervous too, of course, knowing that she always writes fantastic posts and takes the most gorgeous photos! (Editor's note: Aww, thanks M.!) I believe Fall is more her specialty as I'm usually the one who is scared of not just the chilly weather ahead, but I have yet to master the art of layering, keeping warm and looking good -- all at the same time! This year however, I vow to put on my bravest pair of booties and face fall with the sheer determination of a brand new cashmere sweater, bought on sale for 40% off!
Here are my Top Five Essentials for Fall:

Down the Trenches
Have you ever seen a duck (or a swan, if you prefer) underwater? They look so poised and calm on the surface, but underneath those little legs are busy kicking and paddling so they can keep swimming. Trench coats offer the same fashion. You could be wearing an un-ironed button-down shirt or a raggedy pullover, but when you wear a classic-cut trench coat over it, you will instantly look pulled together! Bonus points: It'll keep you warm and toasty!

Not-So-Little Black Dress
This is the most versatile piece you could ever own in your closet! There's so many ways to love 'em: put on a belt, tie a scarf as a belt, wrap a scarf around your neck and belt it, put a cardigan over it. Got a boyfriend blazer or a grandpa cardi? How about a statement necklace, a chunky cable-knit sweater or the oh-co-current military jacket? The combinations are endless, and really you can never go wrong with a Little Black Dress!

Punctuation Scarves
Yes, they do make a statement, but what they really do is add punctuation marks to your outfit! Hoping for a fat exclamation point? Choose scarves that have either: interesting texture; intriguing patterns; exciting details, such as sequins or fringes; and of course, exquisite colours. You'll get a semi-colon and a capital D if you can find one that has them all!

Call of the Wild: Animal Prints
Every September issue of any magazine known to women has a photo spread featuring the King of the Jungle Trend --the Animal Prints! I've personally run far away from this trend, like a squirrel running away from a cheetah. But that's all in the past, because now I embrace them all (shoes, scarves -- the easiest one, purses, cardigans and umbrellas -- yes, even in the rain you need to stay chic) the way Broadway embraced "The Lion King" musical!

Boots: Riding or Otherwise
I know some people say it is sooo cold in their neck of the woods. I don't want to brag or anything, but I live in Canada and we've got the meanest and coldest winters in the world. Boots are your best friends. Booties, Ankle, Tall, Over-the-knee, Suede, Leather, Rain, Uggs -- yes, even those! You don't necessarily need to ride a horse to get 'dem riding boots. If you love your feet and toes and you want to keep them looking well, normal, in April, you MUST invest in boots!

What are your Fall Essentials for this year? Do you dress for comfort, warmth or style? Head over to Twenty York Street to check out JoAnn's My Five!

Guest post for Twenty York Street

Hey friends!
Just wanted to let you know that I had the pleasure of guest-blogging for Marilou of Twenty York Street today. I posted my daily outfit over there, so here's a little sneak peek. I'm also talking about transitioning into autumn clothing, so come join the discussion and say hi!

Bright, sunshine-y day

Dress: Arpeja, vintage, thrifted;
Sweater: Old Navy;
Red belt: Ann Taylor Loft;
Shoes: gift, from Philippines.
How I've worn the dress: here.

Exciting day! The lovely and kind Marilou over at Twenty York Street has an interview up featuring yours truly -- in fact, I think it's my first full interview ever, so yay! Learn more about why I dressed up as Scarlett O'Hara in elementary school, and what I consider my favorite pair of shoes. And while you're there, sit back and enjoy Twenty York Street, too. Marilou's got the killer combination of mad style and a witty writing voice. Through the incredible world of blogging, we've become friends and we have a few ideas up our sleeves that we can't wait to show you soon...

So, I kinda just threw this outfit on to run some errands yesterday, and it's exactly how I'd imagine I'd look like if a Crayola box exploded on me. Lots and lots of brights going on here. The striped sweater is actually more neon-colored in real life, but combined with the dress, it turns into a neutral piece.

This is one of those outfits where it seems wild in theory and I wondered what a middle-aged version of myself would think --- would I smile at the fact that I was daring, or cringe in the way that you grimace at old yearbook photos? I hope I'm more adventurous when I'm older and that this outfit will just be one of those stepping stones, where I look back and say: "This was the day I started to really dress for myself."

Happy Friday!

Featured: Alltumbledown's "Best Practices"

Happy Friday afternoon, everyone!

In case you missed it, the lovely Nina from alltumbledown featured me in her "Best Practices" post. The inception came from Nina reading fashion magazines and realizing they focused mostly on the things women do bad when they dress, and how the magazines feature products that will supposedly help us be better. Read what Nina considers her own best practices in her daily style, and see what other bloggers had to say as well!
