Calm before the storm

We took these photos right before the snowstorm hit. My Target boots have pretty much been shredded during the last couple days. No doubt they were getting pretty old but the ice and snow have pretty much decimated them. I'll be glad to wear other shoes after all the snow is gone ... or consider buying a new pair of long brown boots. Do any of you have a favorite brand?

My car has been on the fritz the last couple days, so Jeremiah and I have been spending more time together by using his car. Because of this he's been taking a few more outfit photos of me than usual. I've discussed before in Hello, Monkeyface's feature that I like being the main photographer,  but now it seems that sometimes I let him take my photos during the winter because I hate making him wait around while I set up my tripod and painstakingly take all of them myself. Although I do like his photography skills, I like seeing the differences between our styles -- I usually try different spots but my angles are usually the same, whereas he likes me to stay in the same spot but likes to try taking photos from different viewpoints. 

Do you take your own outfit photos, or do you rely on someone else, and why? Does the weather affect your photography style?

So Athens got slammed with eight inches of snow earlier this week, and since it never snows that much here, we decided to make the most of it. Just about everything in town got shut down as the roads were really icy all day.

I decided to go with a more playful than practical outfit in the snow, since there are never any opportunities around here to shoot photos in a wintry landscape. Despite the nasty outdoors, I kept warm in my bright red vintage dress, which was perfect for keeping my spirits up during the day in. I like the dress's color contrast to the snow.

We live right next to a cemetery so we trekked over there to look at some of the graves. Just walking a few hundred yards from our home made us feel like pioneers or astronauts walking into an undiscovered world. As much as I am not a snow fan, I am a fan of taking photos of ordinary things transformed by snow's creation/destruction.

It snowed yesterday afternoon and the 1/6 inch we got is still on the ground. Usually snow doesn't stick around very long in Georgia. Our lake in our neighborhood has a thick layer of ice encasing it. Ducks walked across the frozen waters and there were human footprints tracked across the lake -- which freaked me out a bit because the ice doesn't look thick enough to support a human.

I'm not an expert in dressing for winter, mainly because Southern winters are very mild. Even though I should have bundled up and dressed practically, the thought of seeing a serene wonderland made me reach for the more romantic, girly things in my closet. Winter is fun sometimes, but I'd like to get back to wearing my sundresses and shorts and everything else that's wonderful to wear in warmer temperatures, and I secretly think if I keep wearing impractical skirts and dresses, Mother Nature will take notice and bring an early spring.

The ones who seem to be enjoying the weather are the penguins who reside in my house. Jeremiah and I are fond of all things penguin, and have amassed a little collection of stuffed animals and other knickknacks during the course of our relationship. When you tell one family member you love penguins (or pingus as we call them), everyone else takes notice and the theme persists for every gift-giving occasion. I'll really have to round every penguin up and take a photo one day. We decided to let two come out and enjoy the icy outdoors.

Just having a lazy Saturday -- meeting with one my best friends later, and possibly going window shopping.

Today has been the coldest day of winter and marks the first time this season that I've pulled out this coat. I got it in high school and has been a good mainstay in my closet ever since, even when I was at my heaviest. I felt like pattern-mixing today and paired the black-striped top and leopard skirt because they have a color in common, but I felt a little too safe with that combination and added the red coat and tiger pin. I wear the sweater all the time in many different ways, that it has to be one of the best gifts I've ever received.

I feel fiery in this combination.
